The Hotel Monumento San Francisco in Santiago de Compostela hosted this Wednesday a specialized conference on healthy living and active ageing, in which experts in the field highlighted the importance of sport and physical exercise to increase quality of life and autonomy as the years go by.
Under the title ‘Taking care today to live better tomorrow’, the event was organized within the framework of the celebration of O Gran Camiño 2026, in collaboration with Asisa. Both entities have encouraged the use of sport throughout life to ‘Age well’.
Opened by the Regional Minister of Health, Antonio Gómez Caamaño, the conference began with the lecture ‘Benefits of healthy lifestyle habits in active ageing and disease prevention’, delivered by the prestigious cardiologist José Ramón González Juanatey.
In the subsequent discussion took part Dr. Isabel Abad and Dr. Xermán Bugallo Sanz, as well as former cyclists Álvaro Pino and Ezequiel Mosquera, in addition to the managing director of the Fundación Deporte Galego, Iván Clavel San Emeterio.
This panel of experts in different fields addressed issues such as the relevance of preventing physical deterioration through self-care as a basis for future health, keys and recommendations of physical exercise to age better and the influence of physical activity on longevity and quality of life, in aspects such as the delay of brain ageing or the increase of autonomy.
Finally, the conference was closed with the lecture ‘Cycling and healthy ageing’, by Dr. José María Rodríguez Vicente, and was concluded by José María Peinó, representative of Asisa in Galicia.
